Do people need to take vitamin or mineral supplements? Some experts believe that people can rely on a well balanced diet to satisfy their nutritional needs. While others believe that supplements can help in achieving optimal health. Unfortunately, research has shown that most people do not eat a well balanced diet. The Surgeon General has reported that the average diet is too high in fat and too low in fiber. Not only are people getting insufficient amounts of nutrients, but these factors also promote an increased risk of cancer, heart disease and diabetes. Vitamin supplements have been proven to improve nutritional deficiencies and to help maintain good health. Those people who eat a good diet and abide by the U.S. RDA values may also be experiencing dietary shortcomings. Since U.S. RDA's apply to men, women and children in general, it is often difficult to determine if an individual is getting optimal nutrition - a rational for dietary supplements. People may have inadequate diets due to factors, like stress which deprives the body of nutrients. During times of mental anguish or strain, your body requires increased amounts of certain vitamins. Pollution and allergies also weaken the body. In these cases supplements may aid individuals in strengthening the immune system and increasing energy. According to recent studies, athletes who are on restricted diets were found deficient in one or more vitamins and minerals. It may be necessary for these individuals to take a multi-vitamin for better health and performance, also. In addition to these individualized concerns, the general population should be wary of the food supply. Many foods are processed and contain preservatives, fungicides and insecticides. Most people are unaware that some additives increase our need for particular vitamins and minerals (i.e. hydrazine compounds elicit an increased need for vitamin B6). Vitamins and minerals play an important role in maintaining good health. If your goal is to be at optimal health, in addition to a nutrient rich diet, a vitamin or mineral supplement may help you to attain that goal. Copyright
